Matthew Stafford, Rams agree to four-year, $160 million extension contract

In this offseason, many quarterbacks decided to change their teams for the upcoming new season, namely Mitchell Trubisky to the Pittsburgh Steelers, Carson Wentz to the Washington Commanders, Russell Wilson to the Denver Broncos, and the most recent one, Deshaun Watson to the Cleveland Browns.

The defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams have made up their mind and decided to keep quarterback Matthew Stafford.

Following winning the Vince Lombardi Trophy last month against the Cincinnati Bengals, the Rams announced on Saturday that Stafford will be on their team for the upcoming four years on a $160 million extension contract. In addition, the deal includes a $135 million guarantee.

Stafford, Rams

Prior to the Rams, Stafford spent 12 seasons with Detroit Lions. The 34-year-old helped lead Los Angeles to game-winning drives in the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers and the Super Bowl against the Bengals, which was the Rams’ first since 1999.

From 2009-2020 with the Lions, Stafford played in several good wins. However, he was never able to win a playoff game. Things changed when he stepped in for the Rams in 2021. Apparently, things started working out well for him and eventually led his side to a title win.

Although he has only played with the Rams for only one season, his progress was tremendous, throwing 4,886 yards complemented with a career-high 41 TDs, 17 INTs, and 67.2% of passes.

Jourdan Rodrigue of The Athletic reported in early March that Les Snead, general manager of the Rams, convinced Stafford to “run it back” with the team a priority. The contract could go for three to four years. Rodrigue’s speculation was right.

In the last season, the quarterback had capped $23 million. Sunday morning, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that both parties reached an agreement that will tie the quarterback with the Rams for the next five years. Obviously, the team is in no mood to let go of the former Lions QB.

Stafford, contract extension

According to ESPN, the deal was signed off on Saturday but publicly announced on Sunday morning.

Within the quarterback market, the Super Bowl Champion will be tied with Dallas Dak Prescott as the fifth-highest quarterback earner per season. Aaron Rodgers is still at the top of the list at over $50 million, Patrick Mahomes $45 million, and Josh Allen $43 million. Meanwhile, Deshaun Watson will make $46 million but brought in many questions by Rams fans.

While some believed that Stafford was “overpaid”, some others believed that he should be paid at least higher than Brown’s new quarterback, Watson who is believed to have allegedly been involved in several sexual abuse cases.

“(Matthew Stafford)’d get an extra $100 mil if had 22 sexual assault allegations,” by Twitter user referring to the case of Matthew who has less money guarantee than Deshaun.

While there will always be haters and lovers, until recently, Stafford has not released his official statements in his social media accounts, especially about his extension contract.
